After all the registration forms are put in for teams in the Summer League a lot of work takes place behind the scenes to arrange the teams into sections.

The process is like this:-

1. Each player's average is taken from either last years scores or the last average they played. If they are a new player an estimated average is used based on knowledge of the players or their team.

2. The top 8 players average for that team are added.

3. The teams are initially ranked in order of the highest average.

4. The teams are then put into sections based on the number of teams needed i.e. around 10 in each section.

The above 4 steps are done to collate over 600 players averages by the Secretary (with assistance, but not by computer) and then the Committee meet to discuss the sections and competitions.

5. The Premier and A section are then discussed as to where the break-point should be, taking into account player changes, handicaps and winners of the A section in the previous year. The Premier and A section consists of 10 teams and to make a good competition a split is done to make 5 teams in each.

6. Similar discussions take place to ensure the rankings of the other sections (including the team going into the A section) based on last average (adjusted for player differences) and section winners.

The idea of this method is to ensure that teams can improve and have a chance of the section title.

So, now you know how it's done. If anyone can come up with a better, and simpler system we'd love to hear from you!
